Tent Stakes: The Essentials for Camping

If there’s one camping accessory you must not forget during your camping holidays, it’s the tent stakes! When preparing your hiking backpack for a long trek lasting several days or even months, woe betide you if you forget the tent stakes for your hiking tent. Instead of sleeping comfortably on your inflatable mattress and in your sleeping bag, you might end up sleeping under a tarp. The tent stakes are used to secure the frame of your camping tent to the ground at all four corners. Thus, if you encounter wind, rain, hail, or cold during your hike, the tent stakes can make a significant difference in ensuring your tent stays grounded for a good night’s sleep. So, make sure to pack the right number of tent stakes before you set off, to avoid being stuck in the middle of your journey. If the tent is not properly secured to the ground due to a lack of tent stakes, it could damage and deform your tent, or even cause an accident for those around you. Ensure that your tent stakes are always visible without protruding too much from the ground. To help you spot them when packing away your camping gear, opt for colourful tent stakes or place a coloured item on each of them.

Choosing the Right Tent Stakes

Depending on the environment you are in, the type of soil, and the weather conditions, your choice of tent stakes may vary. There are indeed many different tent stakes available on the market, tailored to the needs of the camper. The ancestors of camping stakes, wooden stakes are often heavy and can split quickly if used on overly dry terrain. Therefore, it is advisable to use them in muddy soils. Classic camping stakes (or wire stakes) are very thin and versatile. Wire stakes can be used on all types of terrain, whether hard or loose. Classic stakes can be driven almost entirely into the ground to avoid tripping hazards. They are particularly recommended for securing a lightweight camping tent or ground mats. If you need to pitch your tent on clay or crumbly soil, it is advisable to carry metal tent stakes, shaped like a V or with serrated edges, to secure your setup effectively. There are also synthetic tent stakes available, which are very lightweight but less robust than other camping stakes. If you are faced with challenging weather conditions and difficult soils, it is essential to equip yourself with very sturdy tent stakes such as storm-proof stakes (in case of strong winds), made of thick metal and generally longer than classic stakes. If you find yourself on rocky or frozen ground, you cannot do without steel rock stakes, shaped like a sword. Finally, consider threaded stakes if your tent needs to be pitched on rocky or hard ground. To drive your camping stakes without damaging them, we recommend using a rubber mallet with a small notch to easily remove the stake from the ground.
