Barbour was born in England in 1894, in the small town of South Shields. Originally, the brand specialised in designing comfortable, protective, and stylish clothing. John Barbour decided to open his first shop within the town market.
From the early 1900s, the family business began exporting its first garments through its mail-order catalogue. This marked the beginning of a worldwide reputation, with buyers from Latin America, South Africa, and Asia starting to order clothing from the brand.
In 1939, the brand created its first suit for members of the submarine service: the Ursula suit, made from oilskin cotton, which became the brand's trademark. This collaboration marked the beginning of Barbour's fame.
Over the years, the brand has specialised in designing clothing for everyday wear as well as for pursuing favourite sports: horseback riding, motorcycling, hunting… The brand has carved out an important place within the British monarchy and has received numerous awards from the British Empire.
