Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs : the essential for your freeride outings

In mountains, whether in summer or winter, accidents can happen quickly, so safety is paramount to avoid any unnecessary scares! In winter, when the mountains start to don their beautiful white coat, and the call of the lovely light and deep snow is felt, it often happens that in our haste to enjoy the joys of sliding, we rush, recklessly, to tackle the most beautiful snow-covered slopes without avalanche safety equipment. Mammut, a brand recognised for over 100 years in the design and development of mountaineering gear, offers reliable, lightweight, and robust Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs at the forefront of technology. While it may not guarantee to save your life, the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Pack is an essential piece of equipment when venturing off-piste, as an avalanche can occur at any moment, even if you are an experienced skier or a mountain guide!

Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs: prioritise safety

The Mammut Avalanche Airbag Pack only activates when an avalanche is triggered nearby during your freeride or ski touring outings. Ideally, we hope you will never have to deploy it. An airbag pack is a ski backpack equipped with specific gear to house an airbag, either in the straps or in a dedicated pocket, which inflates when an avalanche occurs. The Mammut Avalanche Airbag Pack is specifically designed for ski expeditions, whether on snowboard, freeride skis, or ski touring. Two airbag systems are present in the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs: the RAS technology (Removable Airbag System) and the PAS technology (Protection Airbag System).

Generally, the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Pack features a U-shaped airbag for optimal protection of the head, back, and chest. Bright orange, its colour also allows for quick location when someone is buried under the snow. The Mammut airbags have a volume of 150 L, a common size on the market, and inflate in just 3 seconds. Mammut offers ski backpacks in various sizes to meet all the requirements of skiers, regardless of their plans. You will find lightweight Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs with smaller volumes (around 15L - 20L) for your day freeride outings. You can also find Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs with larger capacities (45 L) if you decide to embark on a multi-day ski touring expedition.

Most Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs are compatible with a hydration system, allowing you to fit your water reservoir in a specific pocket and stay hydrated throughout the day. Finally, a dedicated compartment for the rest of your avalanche safety gear (shovel, probe) is also included in most Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs.

Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs: the different airbag systems

When choosing the system for your airbag pack, it is important that it fits your budget, criteria, and that you find it easy to use. There are different airbag technologies and several triggering systems (cable, explosive, or ventilation). Most Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs are triggered using a cable (a handle present on the strap of the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Pack) that must be pulled to puncture the gas cartridge, inflating the airbag. Among the ranges of Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs, you will find two systems: PAS (Protection Airbag System) and RAS (Removable Airbag System).

Removable Airbag System Technology

The Removable Airbag System technology, as its name suggests, is a system where the airbag can be removed from the ski backpack, transforming it into a regular backpack. The Mammut Avalanche Airbag Pack equipped with the RAS system features a unique seam and provides relatively good protection for your head, back, and chest, thanks to its uniform U shape.

Among the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs equipped with the Removable Airbag System, we recommend:

- Mammut Ride Short Removable Airbag 3.0

- Mammut Flip Removable Airbag

- Mammut Ultralight Removable Airbag 3.0

Protection Airbag System Technology - PAS

Another protection system, the PAS (Protection Airbag System) technology, which also equips the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs, offers, unlike the RAS technology, traumatic protection. The airbag is partially housed in the straps of the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Pack. The U shape of the airbag is also much more enveloping than the other technology, thus helping to prevent trauma to the cervical area. Another advantage of the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Pack with PAS technology is its minimal bulk. More compact, the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Pack is lighter by a few grams, a quality sought after by freeriders when it comes to climbing a steep slope with skis and poles attached to the pack.

Among the Mammut Avalanche Airbag Packs equipped with the Protection Airbag System technology, we recommend:

- Mammut Rocker Protection Airbag 3.0

- Mammut Ride Protection Airbag 3.0

- Mammut Pro Protection Airbag 3.0
